Bowl Game

Excitement pulsed through my body. It was time to play U-City in the first place bowl game. Last season, we didn’t do so well, but this year we are undefeated. The referee blew his whistle. U-City won the coin toss and decided to receive first. The captains of my team ran back to our huddle on the sidelines. We prayed for this to be a great game and now the opening kickoff was about to begin.
“Boom” Luke kicked the ball off. The ball soared high in the air to the left side of the field. I fired off the line, sprinting, ready to hit anyone who dares to get in my way. Instincts made me flow towards the ball like my coach showed me many times in practice, taking on block after block. I was on the right side of the field, so Antwan came from the left side of the field and knocked the poor ball carrier on his butt. It was a play maker hit, as my coaches would say, and it helped pump my team up.
We came out in a five-two defense to start the game. I played cornerback on the right side. U-City ran to the left side of the ball, but Shandon came up to the stuff up hole. It kept going on like this for the first quarter, with them occasionally running to my side. That’s one thing I don’t like about cornerback, I barely get any action! We finally stopped them on 4th down and by rules we get the ball. The score 0-0.
It’s the middle of the second quarter and we are on offense for the first time all game. It’s a tie game the score still 0-0.
“I Right Power 36. On one” Shandon whispered to us in the huddle. We always start our offensive drive with this play.
“Ready…Break” We all shouted as we ran to the line of scrimmage.
“Down…Set...Hit” Shandon shouted. Instantly I fired out to the six hole on the right to block the line backer, as our starting tail back Ish ran with the football, following me through the hole. Surprisingly Ish made a 5 yard run to a 13 yard run. Next we did a spinner 22 which is where I receive the hand off through the 2 hole on the right. I got the ball running through the hole. Since it was straight up the middle I made a quick cut to the right trying to break lose. I outside linebacker got me I went by and I dragged him for 3 yards before he got me down.7 yard, easy. This kept going with us getting first downs to keep the drive alive, until finally we were in the red zone, which is when you’re close to the end zone.
“I Pro Right 80 Flag. On one” Shandon said in the huddle.”Ready…Break” We ran up to the line determined to score.”Down…Set…Hit” Shandon shouted. I ran to the right and picked up the defensive end as Eli ran his flag pattern. Shandon threw a perfect pass to Eli in the end zone. Touchdown! We were up 6-0, because we missed our point after attempt or P.A.T.
It went on like this, us on offense then defense, and U-City on offense then defense, but no one scoring. This went on throughout the rest of the second, third, and most of the fourth quarters.
Fourth quarter…15 seconds left till the games over, we’re still up 6-0. Us, Kirkwood thinking we won, but U-City determined to come back and win the game. We were on defense, I’m at my corner position guarding U-City’s wide out. My legs were sore and I was bone tired. Only 15 seconds left to go. Sweat dripped from my face and the crowd noise seemed to die down. I thought to myself there was no point in playing this last play when they can’t come back.
“Down…Set…Go” U-City’s quarterback shouted. Everything seemed to go in slow motion. The man I was guarding was running down the field. I quickly realized it was a run to the left side and broke out in an all out sprint to catch the guy running the ball. My lungs felt as if I they were about to burst. I was out of breath already only three fourths of the way to the man. I remembered all the times we practiced drills like this. How many times I easily did it and now here I am doing it for real in the 1st place bowl game. I was almost there. I was no more than a few feet away… But so was the touchdown. In desperation to keep our lead I do, but sadly I missed. As I would say now I felt “hurt”. They scored and made their P.A.T. so they were up as the buzzer sounded. We lost 6-7.
I felt as if the world was against me. Like it was all my fault and our work this season was put to waste. I felt terrible. My heart seemed to come in my throat as I held back my tears. My whole team had their heads down either crying or very close to it. Since we were the 1st place bowl runner-ups we received a medal. All the coaches said we did great and to keep our heads up. It didn't really help lift our spirits. This game taught me a lesson. Never think you won the game until it’s over.
